FAKTA LIPUTAN. COM, JAKARTA - 2025

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most defining features of contemporary technological development. Its influence now extends across economic systems, educational practices, industrial operations, and social interactions. While AI offers unprecedented efficiency and innovation, it simultaneously raises critical questions regarding ethics, governance, and societal resilience. These strategic issues were the central focus of the Bincang Online Inspiratif (BIONS) Series 287, held virtually on Saturday, 20 December 2025.

The forum featured Prof. Dr. Capt. Eddy Sumartono, DBA., Ph.D. as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, Prof. Eddy emphasized that AI should not be understood merely as a technological instrument, but as a transformative force capable of reshaping human behavior, institutional structures, and social values. Consequently, he argued, the development and deployment of AI must be guided by strong ethical principles, robust regulatory frameworks, and a resilient social foundation.

Prof. Eddy highlighted ethics as the primary pillar in safeguarding AI for the future. According to him, ethical considerations serve as a moral compass that ensures technology remains aligned with human dignity, justice, and social responsibility. Without ethical guidance, even the most sophisticated technologies risk being misused, potentially leading to violations of privacy, discrimination, and widening social inequalities.

“Technological progress without ethical direction may accelerate innovation, but it also accelerates risk,” Prof. Eddy noted. “Ethics ensures that innovation continues to serve humanity rather than undermine it.”

Beyond ethics, regulatory governance was identified as an equally crucial element. Prof. Eddy explained that regulation should not be perceived as an obstacle to innovation. On the contrary, effective and adaptive regulation provides clarity, legal certainty, and protection for both developers and users of AI technologies. Well-designed regulatory frameworks, he argued, encourage responsible innovation while minimizing unintended consequences.

Drawing from international experiences, Prof. Eddy pointed out that many countries are now actively developing AI governance models that prioritize transparency, accountability, and safety. He stressed that Indonesia must also adopt a forward-looking regulatory approach—one that is responsive to global technological trends while remaining sensitive to national contexts and societal needs.

Another key theme of the discussion was social resilience. Prof. Eddy underscored that the widespread adoption of AI has the potential to disrupt labor markets, alter social interactions, and affect mental well-being. Without adequate preparation, societies may experience uncertainty, resistance, and social fragmentation as a result of technological disruption.

However, Prof. Eddy emphasized that disruption should not be viewed solely as a threat. When accompanied by adaptive strategies and inclusive policies, AI can become a powerful catalyst for social progress. Social resilience, in this sense, refers to the collective capacity of individuals, institutions, and communities to adapt, learn, and thrive amid technological change.

Education, according to Prof. Eddy, plays a pivotal role in building such resilience. He advocated for an educational paradigm that integrates digital literacy, ethical reasoning, and character development alongside technical competence. This holistic approach, he argued, would prepare future generations not only to operate advanced technologies but also to evaluate their societal implications critically.

The discussion session of BIONS Series 287 was marked by active participation from attendees representing diverse professional and academic backgrounds. Participants raised questions regarding workforce readiness, national policy challenges, and individual responsibility in maintaining ethical standards within digital environments. In response, Prof. Eddy emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration.

He asserted that the governance of AI cannot be delegated to a single stakeholder. Governments, academic institutions, industry leaders, and civil society must work together to create an ecosystem where technological advancement aligns with public interest.

“Safeguarding technology is a shared responsibility,” he stated. “Collaboration is essential to ensure that AI contributes positively to social development.”

As a recognition of his contribution, Prof. Dr. Capt. Eddy Sumartono was awarded a certificate of appreciation as a keynote speaker of BIONS Series 287. The certificate was formally signed by Dr. Agung Patera, CEO of BIONS Series, symbolizing acknowledgment of Prof. Eddy’s insights and commitment to public education.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Eddy encouraged participants to remain proactive and reflective in responding to technological change. He reminded the audience that while AI will continue to evolve, human values must remain at the core of innovation.

“AI is a powerful tool, but it must never replace human judgment, empathy, and responsibility,” he concluded. “The future of technology ultimately depends on the values we choose to uphold today.”

Through BIONS Series 287, participants were invited to reflect on the broader implications of AI beyond efficiency and automation. The forum reinforced a critical message: sustainable technological progress can only be achieved when ethical integrity, sound regulation, and social resilience advance together.
