Prof. Dr. Capt. Eddy Sumartono Donates 11 Monumental Books to PIP Makassar
Makassar, August 20, 2025
– Indonesia’s maritime education has once again received a valuable
contribution. Prof. Dr. Capt. Eddy Sumartono, DBA., Ph.D., an academic,
prolific author, maritime practitioner of international repute, and alumnus of
PIP Makassar Class 17, officially handed over 11 of his authored books to the Politeknik
Ilmu Pelayaran (PIP) Makassar. The handover ceremony took place at the PIP
Makassar campus on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, and was received directly by Capt.
Rudy Susanto, M.Pd., Director of PIP Makassar.
This book donation was more than just
a ceremonial act; it represented Prof. Eddy’s genuine concern for literacy
development, the improvement of educational quality, and the cultivation of
leadership character among the younger generation in the maritime and business
world.
A Significant Moment for Maritime
Education
In his remarks, Capt. Rudy Susanto
expressed his deepest appreciation for Prof. Eddy’s consistent contribution in
producing high-quality works.
“PIP Makassar is honored to receive
the academic works and thoughts of Prof. Dr. Capt. Eddy Sumartono. These books
will serve as a source of inspiration and valuable academic references for our
cadets and the entire academic community,” said Capt. Rudy.
He further emphasized that the
collection would enrich insights in the fields of leadership, management, and
digital innovation—subjects highly relevant to today’s maritime development.

A Tangible Contribution to the Next
Generation of Seafarers
On this occasion, Prof. Eddy conveyed
his hope that these books would not only serve as reading material but also
inspire PIP Makassar cadets as they prepare to face global challenges.
“Knowledge should not stop in the
classroom. Future leaders must be able to improvise, adapt to technology, and
remain grounded in moral values. This is the central message I have conveyed in
these books,” Prof. Eddy explained.
As a senior captain and academic with
extensive international experience, Prof. Eddy stressed the importance of
integrating practical knowledge from the field with a strong academic
theoretical foundation. According to him, maritime education must produce
graduates who are both technically competent and emotionally resilient.
Relevance of the Books to the Digital
Era and Society 5.0
A key highlight of the donated books
is their focus on the digital era and Society 5.0. Prof. Eddy does not
merely write about traditional maritime leadership but also explores how Artificial
Intelligence (AI), big data, and digital transformation are reshaping
business and shipping.
For instance, in HRM 5.0: Strategi
Inovatif Mengelola SDM di Era Transformasi Digital, he examines innovative
ways of managing human resources in the face of modern technological
challenges. Similarly, Nakhoda Masa Depan discusses how future
shipmasters must be adaptive to the changing times.
This aligns with PIP Makassar’s vision
of modernizing its curriculum to meet the needs of the global industry.
Dedication of a Prolific Author
The book handover further solidifies
Prof. Eddy’s reputation as a prolific author. In recent years, he has published
dozens of titles covering leadership, management, marine economics, and the
philosophy of seafaring life.
Many of his works are already used as
teaching materials in maritime and business universities, both in Indonesia and
abroad. It is no surprise that he is often recognized as one of the most
influential maritime intellectuals in Southeast Asia.
“For me, writing is a way to pass down
experiences and knowledge to future generations. What I have lived as a ship
captain, I have poured into ideas so that more people can learn from them,”
Prof. Eddy stated.
Supporting a Culture of Literacy on
Campus
Literacy culture among cadets is one
of PIP Makassar’s main priorities. With this book donation, it is hoped that
students will be increasingly motivated to read, write, and produce their own
academic works.
“Books are the windows to knowledge.
What Prof. Eddy has given us is a priceless gift. We will ensure that all
cadets have access to study these works,” said a senior
lecturer at PIP Makassar who attended the event.
Beyond enriching the library, these
books are expected to serve as discussion material, research references, and
inspiration for students’ writings.
Looking Ahead
At the end of the event, Prof. Eddy
reaffirmed his commitment to continue supporting maritime education in
Indonesia. He also opened opportunities for broader collaboration with PIP
Makassar in the form of guest lectures, seminars, and joint research.
“PIP Makassar is one of Indonesia’s
leading maritime education institutions. I believe that through synergy between
practitioners and academics, we can produce maritime leaders ready to face
globalization,” he emphasized.
The institution warmly welcomed this
idea and expressed hope for more collaborations in the future.
Conclusion
The donation of 11 books by Prof. Dr.
Capt. Eddy Sumartono to PIP Makassar is a milestone event symbolizing the
synergy between maritime intellectuals and higher education institutions. More
than a ceremonial act, it represents the dedication, care, and commitment
of a ship captain and academic in building the intellectual foundation of
future generations.
With these monumental works now part
of PIP Makassar’s academic environment, it is expected that cadets will not
only study navigation and seamanship, but also leadership, ethics,
innovation, and resilience in facing life’s storms.
As Prof. Eddy poignantly remarked:
“A true leader is not only able to
steer the ship through a storm, but also able to navigate himself through the
tides of change.”
