Makassar, August 28, 2025 – A wave of enthusiasm marked the launch of the Exclusive Inaugural Podcast of the Makassar Polytechnic of Shipping (PIP Makassar), organized under the coordination of the Human Resources Development Agency for Transportation (BPSDM Perhubungan). The event featured Prof. Dr. Capt. Eddy Sumartono, S.Si.T., SH., LL.M., M.Mar., MBA., DBA., Ph.D., as the sole keynote speaker, delivering an oration on the topic: “Building World-Class Competence in Transportation Human Resources.”

Prof. Eddy Sumartono’s presence as an internationally recognized expert and practitioner brought a distinctive dimension to the prestigious event. He emphasized that human resources in the transportation sector are the true drivers of national competitiveness, beyond infrastructure and regulations. “Transportation is the lifeblood of the nation, and transportation human resources are the heart that keeps it moving. Without world-class human resources, it is impossible for us to compete in the global arena,” he stated.

The podcast became even more remarkable with the participation of the heads of 11 Technical Implementation Units (UPT) of Education and Training under the Ministry of Transportation, representing institutions across Indonesia:

  2. Director of the Jakarta Maritime Training and Upgrading Center
  3. Director of Semarang Polytechnic of Shipping
  4. Director of Surabaya Polytechnic of Shipping
  5. Director of Banten Polytechnic of Shipping
  6. Director of Barombong Polytechnic of Shipping
  7. Director of Malahayati Polytechnic of Shipping
  8. Director of West Sumatra Polytechnic of Shipping
  9. Director of North Sulawesi Polytechnic of Shipping
  10. Director of Sorong Polytechnic of Shipping
  11. Head of Jakarta Maritime Training and Education Center

Their presence underscored the strategic importance of this event as a platform to strengthen synergy in maritime education and training throughout Indonesia.


Developing Globally Competitive Transportation Human Resources

In his oration, Prof. Eddy outlined five key pillars for advancing transportation human resources:

  1. Education and Training with Global Standards
  2. Integration of Digital Technology in HR Competence
  3. Strengthening of Soft Skills and Character
  4. Triple Helix Collaboration between Government, Industry, and Academia
  5. Policies Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

He further stressed the need for international certifications, mastery of digital technologies, and soft skills such as leadership and cross-cultural communication. Citing global data, he noted that over 75% of transportation accidents worldwide are caused by human error, underscoring the critical importance of integrity and emotional intelligence in the workforce.


A Festive Atmosphere and Shared Vision for the Future

The lively event was not merely an academic discussion, but also a moment of consolidation to unify the vision of maritime education institutions under the Ministry of Transportation.

“Indonesia is moving toward its Vision 2045. To achieve it, transportation must become the backbone of development. And that will only be possible if we have world-class, globally competitive human resources,” Prof. Eddy emphasized in his closing remarks.

The Exclusive Inaugural Podcast of PIP Makassar is expected to serve as a milestone in the transformation of national transportation education and training, paving the way for Indonesian human resources to emerge as major players in the global transportation industry.
